Curriculum-based PL and Implementation Support for OpenSciEd

The inquiryHub team supports educators with the adoption, implementation, and adaptation of OpenSciEd’s high-quality instructional materials for secondary science.

We Offer

Workshops that focus on implementing the OpenSciEd instructional model — both online and in-person for individual teachers and groups.

Data-driven continuous improvement with school districts to support adoption and sustained professional learning using OpenSciEd as a leverage point for transforming science teaching and learning.

Strategic support to districts to develop local adaptations of elements of OpenSciEd instructional materials and guide piloting of the materials.

Why We Focus on Supporting High-Quality Instructional Materials

OpenSciEd’s high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) can improve outcomes for students and be a lever for change in science classrooms. We offer professional learning to support HQIM because:

  1. The Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines ambitious instructional practices for science classrooms. Our workshops support teachers in making the pedagogical shifts called for by the Framework.

  2. The existing demands on teacher time are great. Utilizing HQIM takes the curriculum development burden off teachers, giving them time to do what they do best: support student learning by adapting existing resources and building meaningful relationships with students.

  3. District leaders face challenges when adopting curriculum materials. Our services meet districts where they are by partnering to understand the district context and providing guidance for local adoption and implementation of HQIM.

The inquiryHub Approach to Professional Learning for OpenSciEd

We support educators and partners as they prepare to use OpenSciEd materials to meet the needs of students in local contexts. In our professional learning:

  • We offer introductory, unit specific and topic-focused PL specific to OpenSciEd (e.g., assessment, multilingual learners).

  • We emphasize the central role of teachers and teaching in implementing OpenSciEd.

  • We prepare educators for the shifts in vision, practice, and classroom culture required to implement OpenSciEd with integrity and equitably.

  • We engage educators in activities to help them think like a student and develop an appreciation for the student experience in OpenSciEd.

How We Partner with Schools & Districts

We provide learning experiences using the freely available PL materials for OpenSciEd; we also customize them to address individual needs. Our evidence-based approach to professional learning is continuously refined through ongoing improvement research.

Benefits of Our Approach

By partnering with inquiryHub for Professional Learning using OpenSciEd:

District leaders can use OpenSciEd as a tool for building system-wide capacity for ensuring all students have access to quality learning experiences in science.

School leaders can learn what high-quality science instruction looks like to be able to better support it.

Teachers learn to use high-quality instructional materials to facilitate learning experiences that are impactful, engaging, and relevant to students’ lives.

Students experience engaging, relevant science learning and develop positive science identities.

Free Resources

While slide decks and resources from the curriculum and professional learning materials are free and available for anyone to use, they are most effective when used with a trained facilitator.
